BAROT

Barots were people who used to go from town to town and note down the important events in the lives of the people in the clans of their patrons. The events included births, deaths, marriages, and divisions in the families and other important events. For various reasons the activities of the Barots have decreased during the recent times and it is unlikely that this tradition will continue much longer.

SATYUG

In our religious books ,the eras are divided into four parts or yugs: Satyug, Dwaperyug, Tretayug and Kaliyug. It is said that in the Satyug, when the history begins, people were very virtuous.We are presently in Kaliyug where people are at the lowest level of virtue.

DEVAS

There were supposed to be three kinds of beings in the universe. Devas lived in the Heavens or the skies, humans lived on the Earth and the cruel and unethical Danavas lived below the earth.

SWAYAMVAR

In ancient India swayamvar was organized to allow princess to choose a husband. Princes, kings and others of high births were invited and tests of bravery and skills were often held. The princess would select a husband by garlanding a person of her choice.

NANDISHRADH

Ceremonies like Nandishradha were performed prior to weddings and other ceremonies in our community, even today.

DAKSHINA

Dakshina is a term used to denote an offering or reward given to Brahmins for performing religious duties or participating in the religious functions.

YOJANA

Measure of land. Yojana = approx nine miles.

YAGNA

A yagna was a type of ritual sacrificial ceremony often performed by kings to express or gain power.

BRAHMBHOJAN

Feast for Brahmins.

NANDWANA

The Nandimukh Brahmins were now referred to as the Nandwanas.

DOODH PAK

The sweet dish made of milk and rice with dried fruits.
